Kenya teaches in English. Kenyan students sit national examinations in English. Many arrive at the application stage assuming this settles the language question.

Sometimes it does. Often it does not — and the difference costs students months when they discover it late.

This article explains which test each destination accepts, what scores are actually required, when Kenyans can be exempt, and how to prepare without paying for a retake.

Why an English test is required at all

Two separate bodies assess your English, and they do not always agree.

The university sets an academic entry requirement. This varies by institution and by course. Competitive programmes set higher bars than others.

The immigration authority sets a visa requirement, which is often lower than the university’s, and sometimes accepts different evidence entirely.

You must satisfy both. Meeting the visa threshold does not gain you admission, and holding a university offer does not automatically satisfy a visa officer.

The main tests, and who accepts them

IELTS Academic is the most widely accepted across the UK, Australia, Canada, New Zealand and Ireland, and is accepted by most US institutions. It remains the default recommendation for Kenyan students because it carries the fewest acceptance risks.

IELTS for UKVI is a specific version required for certain UK visa routes. It tests the same content but is administered under additional security conditions. Booking standard IELTS when UKVI was required is a common and costly error — confirm which version your route needs before booking.

TOEFL iBT is widely accepted in the US and by many institutions elsewhere.

PTE Academic is accepted across Australia, the UK, Canada and New Zealand, and typically returns results faster than IELTS.

Duolingo English Test is significantly cheaper and taken at home, and acceptance has widened considerably. But acceptance is uneven — some universities accept it for admission while the immigration authority does not accept it for the visa. Verify both before relying on it.

Typical score requirements

These are indicative ranges. Always confirm against the specific institution and the current immigration guidance.

Destination Common undergraduate range Common postgraduate range
United Kingdom IELTS 6.0 – 6.5 overall IELTS 6.5 – 7.0 overall
Canada IELTS 6.0 – 6.5 overall IELTS 6.5 – 7.0 overall
Australia IELTS 6.0 – 6.5 overall IELTS 6.5 – 7.0 overall
United States TOEFL 79 – 90 or IELTS 6.5 TOEFL 90 – 100 or IELTS 7.0
Germany (English programmes) IELTS 6.0 – 6.5 overall IELTS 6.5 overall

The detail that catches students out: minimum band scores per section.

Many institutions require not just an overall score but a minimum in each of the four components. A student scoring 7.5 in reading and 5.5 in writing may hold an overall 6.5 and still fail the requirement because of the writing band alone.

Check the per-section minimum before you book. It changes how you prepare.

Can Kenyan students be exempt?

Sometimes — and it is worth checking before spending KES 30,000.

Exemption is most commonly available where:

  • Your entire prior degree was taught and assessed in English at a recognised institution, and you can provide a formal medium-of-instruction letter from that institution
  • The specific university has a published exemption policy for applicants from countries where English is an official language
  • You hold another accepted qualification that the institution recognises in place of a test

Two cautions.

First, university exemption does not always mean visa exemption. A university may waive the test while the immigration authority still requires evidence. These are separate decisions by separate bodies.

Second, a medium-of-instruction letter must be formal. It should come from the registrar on official letterhead, state explicitly that instruction and assessment were conducted in English, and cover the full duration of the programme. An informal letter is routinely rejected.

If you think you may qualify for exemption, confirm it in writing with both the institution and against current immigration guidance before deciding not to sit a test. Discovering the exemption does not apply two months before an intake is a difficult position to recover from.

Practical preparation

Sit a full timed practice test before booking anything. Most students discover their weakest section is not the one they assumed. That single test tells you whether you need two weeks of polish or three months of work, and it prevents booking a date you are not ready for.

Prepare for the format, not just the language. IELTS tests specific task types under time pressure. Strong English does not automatically produce a strong band if you have never practised the format. Writing Task 1 in particular has conventions that reward familiarity.

Writing is where Kenyan candidates most often lose marks. Reading and listening bands tend to come in higher than writing. If your target requires a minimum in every section, writing is usually the section that determines whether you pass or repeat.

Book early. Test centre availability tightens ahead of major intakes. Booking late can push your result past your application deadline even when your score would have been fine.

Budget for one retake. Not because you will need it, but because building it into the plan means a lower-than-expected result costs you money rather than an entire intake cycle.

How results fit into your timeline

Most English test results are valid for two years, which is longer than most students realise — but the practical planning point is different.

You want your result in hand before you submit university applications, not pending. Applications submitted with a result outstanding sit in a holding pattern, and for competitive courses with rolling admissions, that delay can cost you the place.

Working backwards from a September intake, the test should ideally be sat by the preceding December or January. See When to Start Your Application for the full sequence.
